Mom in Lancaster

We went on a walk on this great spring day that Mom was flying back to Cali from her week with the kiddos. Before we took off on our walk I stopped by our car that still had all our luggage in it and got out Arwyn and Malachi's gifts from london: pink London sweatshirt and a red double decker bus for Malachi.

A day in London City

We got to travel to London city, cause we were actually staying in High Wycombe, with a dear friend Joel Elliston and his wife Trish and son Lawrence. We took the train that had a very nice "loo" in it with a rotating space-ish door to a station that we hopped on the "tube" with J and T, pictured here, into London city.

Here is Big Ben sticking out of our heads.

And at the bottom is me right after the changing of the gaurds.

Philly

Before our trip to London we drove into Philly for the day to get Evangeline's first passport. We had made an appointment to get it "same day". But apparently after we went through the security and then waited in line for 30 minutes to get a number and get in line, then waited for about an hour to be called (even though we were on time for our 10:15 appointment, so now it's after twelve) the woman at the counter said that because my passport expired in 3 months, it was expired. What's the purpose of an expiration date if that's not the actual expiration date its in fact three months earlier? She then explained that in order to get Vange's passport my passport had to be renewed and to do that I needed new photos and my own appointment. But she would sneak us in...So after I ran, with the baby in my arms out the building and into the streets of Philly to find a place to take new passport photos, I came back to a huge security line to enter building (let me tell you this was worse than the airport if you can imagine that), then back to the window that we were building helped at. We were so thankful to God that the lady snuck us in because, I would have had to make another appointment for my passport and come back into Philly, but we had three days till we left and we wouldn't have enough time to do that.

In between time till we picked up or passports we walked around Philly, had lunch, and played at a park. This is us standing in front of Independence Hall, that is in fact pictured inside of your passport photo book.

Cooking Day 2: Enchiladas

Can you beleive that Kubra and Ekrom have never had enchiladas? Well, actually Marleen on the far right has only had them once before now but her excuse is that she is Canadian!

We met at our house this time to pass on my mother's famous recipe for enchiladas. It was because of these enchiladas that I was asked to open my own restaraunt! But I had a little hiccup. When I went to the store to get the Lawry's seasoning packet to make the sauce with (the key ingredient), they didn't have it. Not only did they not have it but they looked at me like I came from another planet when asked if they carried it or at least a can of enchilada sauce. One lady said " try Taco Bell, " when I asked if they even eat echiladas on the east coast! So I went home and made a sauce from scratch. But of course when I got home I doscovered I was missing all the necessary spices to make it. So I improvised with some taco seasoning and chili seasoning and a little of this and that. It ended up fine, but a little on the spicy side because I had to use a can of enchilada sauce that Mar brought over to mak ethe sauce go farther. It had a kick to it. Side note: it took Malachi three whole meals to finish his enchiladas because he thought they were too spicy. By lunch the next day he was starving and eating everything in the kitchen once he finished his plate.

We went on to have allthe gents join us and celebrated Kubra's husband
Mohamed, birthday mexican style. We had sugar cane and Sangria (soda), and Erin's yummy mexican style soup!
Feliz Complianos Mohamed!

Cooking day 1:Mantos

My freind's Marleen, Erin, Kubra and Ekrom have decided to rotate going to eachothers house and teaching eachother new dishes. At Kubra's house about two weeks ago she taught us how to make an afhgani dish called Manto's. They were dangerously Yummy!

Make a meat mixture and place them in the center of a wonton dough square, fold them expertly and steam them!

the things we do for beauty

On the same subject as below... I was just at my friend Radwa's house. She is from Egypt and does threading. It is a method of hair removal similiar to waxing but with a peice of thread instead. It pulls your hair out from the root and leaves it silky smooth. I got my whole face done, it was a great cultural experience.

All grown up and nowhere to go

Today was the much anticipated, talked about day! I remember when Arwyn was born Josiah and I had our first real disagreement. Should we pierce her ears as a baby? My answer, OF COURSE NOT! To me piercing ears came after makeup, would you put lipstick and mascara on your newborn? Then why on earth would you pierce her ears? But Josiah grew up in Latin America where the boys are circumcised at birth and the girls ears are pierced. It's actually in the Hospital! It was nice and awkward when his family were visiting for her birth and asking if we would do it. We were still in the midst of arguing about it.

Well, our compromise was that we would wait and give her the choice when she was ready and He would take her as a special Daddy daughter date. That day came. I know your thinking that's not a compromise, you won. But it is because back then I didn't think she should get it till AFTER makeup, and let me tell you makeup is far off, as well as perfume! SHEESH she doesn't even have a bra yet, although she has been eyeing them in the store...

She asked me if it was going to hurt, and just like my mom did with me and my first papsmire, I told her the truth: It would at first but it would be over soon and she would be happy to have them. I wish my mom would have lied to me, though. Look at those sad eyes! She can barely break out a smile for the camera:( But by the time she got home to me and Malachi she was A-OK! AND daddy let her ride in the front of the car there and back. All the sudden I feel like growing up is in full speed. I was excited for her when she came home but looking at those tiny little sparkly flowers in her ears, I still had a twinge that she was still too young to have them... or maybe the twinge was that she is growing up too fast...

As they were leaving the mall she asked Dad when she could get her nose pierced!
